Neuropathy Self-Care Reminders

Self-care is crucial when dealing with neuropathy. Here are some daily strategies (you may even want to print as reminders) that may help you too. We often discuss these pieces of self car with our private practice patients:

Foot Care: Regular inspections: This is crucial! Check your feet daily for cuts, sores, or any signs of infection.

  • Proper footwear: Choose comfortable shoes that fit well to avoid pressure points and irritation. We can help fit you with the best shoes and orthotics when needed.

  • Moisturize: Keep your feet moisturized to prevent dry skin and cracks. DO NOT walk barefoot after moisturizing and always protect yourself from falls!!!

Pain Management:

  • Temperature regulation: Use warm water for baths and showers, and avoid extreme temperatures.

  • Topical treatments: Apply creams or ointments only as advised by your Physician.

  • Relaxation techniques: Practices like deep breathing or meditation can help manage stress, which may contribute to pain.

Diet and Nutrition:

  • Balanced diet: Ensure you're getting essential nutrients, especially those that support nerve health (B vitamins, antioxidants). Key supplements like we use in our clinics may be helpful too.

  • Limit or better yet eliminate alcohol: Alcohol consumption can worsen neuropathy.

Exercise:

  • Regular physical activity: Exercise can improve circulation and reduce symptoms. Consult with your doctor to determine suitable activities.

Blood Sugar Management:

  • For diabetics: Maintain blood sugar levels within the target range to prevent further nerve damage.

Quit Smoking:

  • Smoking can restrict blood flow, exacerbating neuropathy symptoms.

Stay Hydrated:

  • Proper hydration supports overall health and can help prevent complications.

Pacing Activities:

  • Break tasks into smaller, manageable segments to prevent overexertion.

Sleep Hygiene:

  • Ensure you get enough restful sleep to support overall well-being.

Stress Management:

  • Techniques such as mindfulness, yoga, or talking to a therapist can help manage stress, which can exacerbate neuropathic symptoms.
